Training Techniques and Mental Skills

At SYPA we focus on teaching practical skills to enable professionals to develop their mental abilities to the same extent that their physical abilities progress. Mental skills training focuses upon core skills such as concentration, anxiety control, goal setting, motivation, relaxation techniques, imagery, and self-confidence. In addition, a professional’s ability to perform consistently is often determined by the consistency of their emotions. When they learn to respond positively to professional and personal challenges that they are presented with, their performance in training and in a competitive workplace environment will be affected by their emotional reactions to those challenges. Therefore if they can master their emotions, they will have the power to use those emotions as a tool to facilitate successful individual and team performance.

Goal Setting


Here at SYPA we have found that professionals are highly motivated by clear goals and appropriate feedback. Working toward a goal provided a major source of motivation to actually reach the goal – which, in turn, improved the level of performance. Studies have found that there is a distinct relationship between how difficult and specific a goal is and people’s performance of that task. The more specific and difficult goals led to better task performance than vague or easily attainable goals.

At our quarterly (Four classes per year) full day class we take time to conduct a goal setting session that helps our clients to identify and set projected goals for the week, month, quarter, six month mark, and the year. We teach our clients the power of prioritizing, committing, and accomplishing a successful goal driven life.

While we believe that setting goals is crucial to success, we at SYPA prefer to have our clients set performance goals rather than outcome goals so that it is easier to control and obtain. Outcome goals may not be under a client’s control if completion of that goal depends on other people’s actions.
